The desert in Tunisia

Exploring the Tunisian desert is like stepping into another world—one where vast sandscapes and dramatic mountain ranges hold timeless stories.

Photography and words by M.B. Belfort

My journey began in Nefta, a historic town known for its palm-fringed oases and ancient mudbrick architecture. A short trip away lies Tozeur, a town that flourishes on the edge of the Sahara, famed for its intricate brickwork and beautiful desert gardens. Tozeur’s narrow streets and vibrant marketplaces pulse with the unique rhythm of desert life, offering glimpses into the past and present of Tunisia’s unique cultural tapestry.

One of the highlights was visiting the Star Wars Mos Espa film location, where fans can wander through the fictional Tatooine. Standing in this surreal spot, I felt a unique blend of nostalgia and awe, surrounded by iconic desert vistas. Another film location is a place where “The English Patient” had been filmed. Moving toward the Atlas Mountains, I reached the village of Tamerza, with its picturesque, abandoned structures, and Mides Oasis—a hidden gem set amid cliffs and winding ravines. These stunning landscapes offered breathtaking views, and I was captivated by the blend of isolation and beauty that defines the Tunisian desert.

Tunisia’s desert region holds an undeniable allure, not only for photographers but for anyone seeking the wonders of a vast, mysterious world. The hospitality of the local people and their ancient way of life add depth to the mesmerizing scenery, making this a journey that resonates long after you’ve left.
